Joan Chambers Concert Series

The Joan Chambers Concert Series at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg will present the PM Woodwind Project on Friday, January 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mary Lou Campana Chapel and Lecture Center.

The PM Woodwind Project is a flute and clarinet duo committed to sharing education-based chamber and solo music performances with the public. Members Amanda Morrison and Dan Parasky are Pittsburgh natives with more than 30 combined years of experience as performers and teachers. Friends since their undergraduate years of study at Duquesne University, the two combine their similar interests in exploring repertoire and educating aspiring musicians and the general public about their instruments and music.

PM Woodwind Project programs are created to accomplish two objectives: first, to provide the audience with a high-quality, entertaining performance and, second, to educate attendees about classical music, new music, composers, instruments, performance, and the musician’s life.

In addition to recently being invited to perform at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair, the ensemble eagerly anticipates their debut performances at their respective instruments’ National and International Conferences this summer. The duo has also held recent recitals, lectures, and open forum discussions at venues throughout Pennsylvania, including Slippery Rock University, Chatham University, the Mt. Lebanon Public Library, and Memorial Park Presbyterian Church.

Amanda Morrison, DM, (www.amandarmorrison.com) is a highly recognized clarinet performer and teacher in the Pittsburgh region. In addition to being the clarinetist for the PM Woodwind Project, Morrison is the clarinetist with The Eclectic Laboratory Chamber Orchestra (ELCO), a contemporary new music ensemble.

As a soloist, her recent engagements have included performances at the International Clarinet Association’s ClarinetFest and the NACWPI National Convention as well as lectures and recitals at colleges and universities in Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, and Arkansas. She has also performed with the Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra, Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, Butler Symphony Orchestra, St. Vincent Camerata, and the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival.

As an educator, Morrison was a member of the faculty at Florida State University, Gulf Coast Community College, the Red River Chamber Music Festival, and Musik Innovations. Throughout her 16-year teaching career, she has maintained an active schedule as a private clarinet instructor and clarinet clinician, leading master classes and ensemble coaching as well as teaching private lessons to students who have continued their musical pursuits at leading universities throughout the country. Amanda earned a bachelor’s of music degree from Duquesne University, studying with Mark Nuccio, and her master’s and doctorate degrees in music from Florida State University, studying with Deborah Bish, DM, and Frank Kowalsky, DM.

Dan Parasky (www.paraskyflutestudios.com) graduated summa cum laude with music degrees from Boston and Duquesne Universities. His private flute students have earned places in various honors ensembles, soloist competitions and workshops at the local, regional, and national level. Parasky serves as an active clinician in pedagogy, having given educational discussions at area music schools, including Duquesne University, Youngstown State University, and Slippery Rock University. Parasky was also featured in a pedagogy presentation at the National Flute Association’s annual convention in New Work City (2009).

Parasky performs as a member of the NFA Professional Flute Choir and serves on the board of directors for a community music program at the Newlonsburg Music Academy in Murrysville, PA.

The Joan Chambers Concert Series is named in honor of Joan Chambers, late wife of President Emeritus George F. Chambers. She was an ardent supporter and representative of Pitt-Greensburg in the community for many years. While her interests were widespread, she especially enjoyed participating in book-discussion groups, attending cultural events, hosting themed luncheons at her home, and spending winters in southwest Florida. The Children’s Literature Collection in Millstein Library, another of her passions, was developed and named in her honor.

Counselors Corner
Welcome to the “Counseling Corner” section of the Families E-Connection.  Counseling staff regularly contribute to this newsletter, providing information on common stressful times for students and important college mental health topics.

Back from Break
Welcome back, Pitt-Greensburg families. Hopefully, everyone had a fun and restful winter break. It’s a new semester, a new year, and while the academic year is half over and some may feel like college is becoming routine, there are some new stressors and opportunities for your students at this time.

First, returning to campus, particularly for resident students, can feel like a milder version of August move-in. A little post-holiday let-down, or a little homesickness after being home for 3 weeks is not unusual. Encouraging your student to tough it out and get connected on campus is still good advice. If the low mood doesn’t improve in a couple of weeks, you might suggest your student stop by the Counseling Center. This is the time of year when those with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD – a type of depression related to reduced hours of daylight) can really suffer.

After seeing last semesters’ grade reports, some students may decide getting back into the swing of things is not good enough. Some students may need to make some significant changes, and the start of a semester is a good time to do so.

One main behavior change for many students is improving class attendance. Starting the semester by attending every class for the first few weeks makes it a habit that’s much easier to stick with. Towards the end of the semester it will get warm, spring break will come around, and your student may want to go outside more. If you encourage your student to do well at the beginning of the semester, he or she can afford to play outside a bit when it gets warm.

As always, free to contact the Counseling Center with any questions or concerns.

Emergency Notification System

The Emergency Notification System allows for a text/voice message to be dispatched to all subscribers that contains the type of emergency, locations, and instructions for subscribers.

An example of when this system would be activated is if there were a weather-related disaster that  would affect campus activities. This system is not used for campus closings due to bad roads or holiday schedule. The system is tested once each semester. Questions may be directed to the Campus Police at 724-836-9865.

Encourage your student to sign up for the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg ENS (Emergency Notification System). As a student of Pitt-Greensburg, they will want to be alerted in the event of an emergency. The system does not restrict students from entering the phone number of another person such as a parent or spouse.

Simply go to http://www.my.pitt.edu, select My Resources, Emergency Notification System. Complete the form on-line to register.
