GIVE TO PITT

Pitt-Greensburg Athletics honor Scholar Athletes:

The Pitt-Greensburg Athletic Department will held its annual Scholar-Athlete breakfast February 27 to honor and recognize 75 student-athletes for their outstanding academic achievements. Students must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher for the Fall 2013 semester in order to receive recognition.

Kelly O'Hara, a former standout swimmer at the University of Pittsburgh, was the guest speaker. O'Hara swam for the Panthers from 2004 through 2008 and still holds the school record for the 200-yard freestyle relay. She was named the University's Big East Scholar-Athlete of the Year as a senior and graduated with an undergraduate degree in social work. O'Hara, who holds dual citizenship, also competed for the Venezuelan National Team. She currently serves as Life Skills Coordinator at the Pitt Athletic Department.

Congratulations to these outstanding Student-Athletes!

Club Ice Hockey team wins CHE Division Championship

The Pitt-Greensburg Club Ice Hockey team, under the direction of Head Coach Tim Baldwin, made Pitt-Greensburg school history this season by earning the first-seed in the College Hockey East (CHE) playoffs and defeating Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) this past weekend to win the CHE Division Championship. They will next play in the Collegiate Ice Hockey Association’s (CIHA) National Playoffs, scheduled for March 13-15 in Newark, OH.

The Bobcats defeated CMU 9-7 on Saturday evening, February 22, 2014 in a game played at Pitt-Greensburg’s home rink Center Ice Arena (Delmont). The team then went on to defeat CCAC 11-5 there in the final round Sunday evening.

The Pitt-Greensburg campus community was invited to support the team by wearing white to both games, and those who couldn’t attend, stayed up-to-date through an active Twitter feed found at @Pitt-GbgHockey (PittGreensburgHockey). Among the highlights, the Bobcats overcame a 5-on-3 penalty and a five-minute major penalty in one period without allowing CCAC to score single goal.

Joan Chambers Concert Series Spring Events Announced

Music at Pitt-Greensburg will present several performances during the spring semester as part of the Joan Chambers Concert Series, the Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra Chamber Music Series, and the Pitt-Greensburg Chorale and Chamber Singers. The performances are free and open to the public except where noted and begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Mary Lou Campana Chapel and Lecture Center unless otherwise noted.

The Freya String Quartet will perform March 8 as part of the Westmoreland Symphony Chamber Music Series. Tickets, available at the door, are $10 for adults and $5 for students. The Freya String Quartet is comprised of Jason Neukom, Ashley Buckley, Jason Hohn, and Katya Janopoladyan. They are dedicated to performing a wide range of music and to teaching the importance of classical music in the Pittsburgh area.

The Pitt-Greensburg Chorale and Chamber Singers will take center stage on April 11 for their Spring Concert: Festival de Musica. The program will feature Jensen’s El Vito, Grau’s Kasat mie la gaji, and the works of Juan Vasquez. The Chorale and Chamber Singers are Pitt-Greensburg’s two choral ensembles under the direction of Christopher Bartley, director of Music.

Pitt-Greensburg’s Joan Chambers Concert Series will feature two choirs this spring.

The Heinz Chapel Choir, the University of Pittsburgh’s auditioned a cappella choir whose eclectic repertoire ranges from motets to jazz, will perform April 12 in Ferguson Theater. John Goldsmith, director since 1989, is an alumnus of Chanticleer who teachers sight-singing to Pitt’s music majors.

As part of their tour of the Northeast US and Canada, the Tucson Girls Chorus will perform May 27. The group was founded in 1985 and continues to expand the musical tradition of choral singing under the musical leadership of director Dr. Marcela Molina. While the program offers girls, from kindergarten through 12th grade throughout the Tucson metro area, the opportunity to develop vocal and performing skills in one of the eight choirs, this performance will feature the Advanced Choir.

The Joan Chambers Concert Series is named in honor of Joan Chambers, late wife of President Emeritus George F. Chambers. She was an ardent supporter and representative of Pitt-Greensburg in the community for many years. While her interests were widespread, she especially enjoyed participating in book-discussion groups, attending cultural events, hosting themed luncheons at her home, and spending winters in southwest Florida. The Children’s Literature Collection in Millstein Library, another of her passions, was developed and named in her.

Pitt-Greensburg wins the "silver"

The University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg placed in the silver category of the most recent version of the Tribune Review’s regional survey category of “Best College/University in Westmoreland County.” This top-of-mind survey asks readers to fill in the blank for the best in each category ranging from dry cleaners to restaurants to education providers.

During the past two years, Pitt-Greensburg has consistently finished in the silver category in these areas, meaning that the campus has received the second largest number of votes in the “Best College/University” category:

Silver Award – College/University City (Shadyside, Bloomfield, Mount Washington, Downtown Pittsburgh)

Silver Award – College/University South Hills (Mount Oliver, Pleasant Hills, Baldwin)

Spring Break Safety Tips

It may be hard to believe, but Spring Break is next week.  A week away from school is a welcome break for most students, no matter what is planned.  Whether or not your student is going on a vacation, Spring Break can be a time with increased temptation to ‘let go’ and engage in risky behaviors.

For those who are traveling, it’s a good idea to discuss safety with students before they leave on their Spring Break trips.  Students should know, of course, to be smart about how they carry, show, and use debit and credit cards and/or cash, and that it’s safer to travel in groups.

For all students, regardless of their spring break plans, it’s a good time to discuss are the risky behaviors which are potentially more harmful and often result from the overuse of alcohol.  If students choose to consume alcohol, they need to know how to be safe about it.  Encourage them to (1) never accept drinks from strangers, (2) never leave drinks unattended – and don’t drink them when returning, (3) monitor the alcohol’s effect and how much they consume in order to avoid making poor decisions about unhealthy behaviors such as unprotected sex, drug use, and drunk driving.  Being intoxicated puts young people at greater risk for date rape as well.  While females tend to be the victims in these situations, they can happen to anyone.  Important safety suggestions are to have a designated driver and always stay with friends.

Obviously, colleges and families don’t encourage or support underage drinking.  But the reality is that young people sometimes make choices other than what we recommend or what is legal.

Reviewing these risks and safety tips can prevent negative outcomes and help students enjoy a safer spring break.

As always, feel free to contact the Counseling Center with any questions or concerns.

Emergency Notification System

The Emergency Notification System allows for a text/voice message to be dispatched to all subscribers that contains the type of emergency, locations, and instructions for subscribers.

An example of when this system would be activated is if there were a weather-related disaster that  would affect campus activities. This system is not used for campus closings due to bad roads or holiday schedule. The system is tested once each semester. Questions may be directed to the Campus Police at 724-836-9865.

Encourage your student to sign up for the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg ENS (Emergency Notification System). As a student of Pitt-Greensburg, they will want to be alerted in the event of an emergency. The system does not restrict students from entering the phone number of another person such as a parent or spouse.

Simply go to http://www.my.pitt.edu, select My Resources, Emergency Notification System. Complete the form on-line to register.
