Registration for the 3rd annual 5K Run/Fun Walk

Mark your calendar and plan to join us at the 3rd annual Pitt-Greensburg 5K Run/Fun Walk on Saturday, October 5.  Register at http://www.greensburg.pitt.edu/5K by September 18 and pay only $20 (adults) and $10 (children ages 7-12). After September 18, registration is $25 (adults) and $15 (children ages 7-12).

This event offers the opportunity for both serious runners and “just-for-fun” walkers to enjoy Pitt-Greensburg’s beautiful campus—especially during the height of the fall foliage season. Prizes will be awarded to the top runners. A Children’s 100-Meter Sprint will also be held, with children six years old and younger participating at no cost; they must register, though. Day-of-the-race Registration is at 7:00 a.m. followed by the race start at 8:00 a.m.

Proceeds from this event benefit the Alpha Alpha Delta Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society and the Pitt-Greensburg Alumni Association.

Not a runner or walker? Then consider a sponsorship that will help build your company’s brand and image. Sponsorship information is also available on-line.

More importantly, your participation in this event is one way you can assist in sustaining the superior educational and quality experiences of our students—especially as changes to federal and state grant programs and proposed cuts to the Pennsylvania State Budget Appropriations continue to challenge both our students and our campus.

For information about how you can become involved as a volunteer or as a sponsor, please contact724-836-7496 or upgalum@pitt.edu.

Harold Holzer, one of the country’s leading authorities on Abraham Lincoln and the political culture of the Civil War era,
will present this year’s St. Clair Lecture. His topic is “Emancipating Lincoln: The Prose and Poetry of the Emancipation
Proclamation.” Of note is the fact that 2013 marks the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Emancipation
Proclamation.

The event, which is open to the public without charge, will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, October 21, in the Ferguson Theater (University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, 150 Finoli Drive, Greensburg, PA 15601). Holzer, who also is the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s senior vice president for external affairs, is known for combining his
PR expertise with his deep knowledge of Lincoln in presentations that keep his audiences enthralled. A frequent lecturer
throughout the United States, he is recognized from his many television appearances, as well.

He is a prolific writer with 46 books on the topic of Lincoln or the Civil War carrying his name as an author, co-author, or
editor. His latest book is “The Civil War in 50 Objects,” written for the New-York Historical Society. Another book, “Lincoln:
How Abraham Lincoln Ended Slavery in America,” was written as the official young adult companion to the 2012 film,
“Lincoln,” directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg. “Emancipating Lincoln: The Emancipation Proclamation in Text,
Context, and Memory” (Harvard University Press, 2012) is considered an essential guide to Lincoln’s Emancipation
Proclamation.

The recipient of numerous awards and accolades, Holzer received the National Humanities Medal from President George
W. Bush in 2008. He won a coveted second-place Lincoln Prize for his Cooper Union book in 2005 and has six times won
the Barondess Award of the Civil War Round Table of New York.

He serves as chairman of The Lincoln Bicentennial Foundation, successor organization to the US Abraham Lincoln
Bicentennial Commission (ALBC), to which he was appointed by President Clinton in 2000 and co-chaired from 2001-2010.
This past year, in 2012, Holzer had the honor of introducing Steven Spielberg, director of “Lincoln,” at the 149th
anniversary of the Gettysburg Address at the Soldiers’ National Cemetery at Gettysburg. This year, he wrote an essay on
Lincoln for the official program at the re-inauguration of President Barack Obama and is currently serving as the first
Roger Hertog Fellow at The New York Historical Society.

Holzer began his career as a newspaper reporter and, later, editor of the New York weekly Manhattan Tribune. He then
served as a political campaign press secretary for Congresswoman Bella S. Abzurg and future Governor Mario Cuomo.
He also served as a government speechwriter for New York City Mayor Abraham D. Beame, and for six years a public
affairs director for the PBS flagship station WNET. From 1984 through 1992, he served as Special Counselor to the Director
of Economic Development and executive vice president of The New York State Urban Development Corporation in the
administration of Governor Mario Cuomo.

southwestern Pennsylvania. Pitt-Greensburg offers 24 baccalaureate degree programs, including new majors in Education
and Spanish, as well as 19 minors. More than 13 percent of Pitt-Greensburg’s full-time faculty—the highest percentage of

Award.
Fall Theater Performance
Pitt-Greensburg Theatre Company Adds a Bit of Digital Magic to its Matinee Performance

The Pitt-Greensburg Theatre Company will open its 2013-2014 main-stage schedule with “The Birth of
Merlin, or The Child Has Found His Father” by William Shakespeare and William Rowley. “The Birth of Merlin” will be
performed at Pitt-Greensburg’s Ferguson Theater November 21 through November 23 at 7:30 p.m., and November 24 at
2:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 regular, $5 Students/Seniors/Pitt ID. A dinner theatre option will be offered in conjunction with
the Saturday, November 23, performance. Details will be available later in October.

Stephen A. Schrum, associate professor of Theatre Arts at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, will direct “The Birth
of Merlin.” John Teacher, instructor of Theatre Arts at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and a former collaborator
with Schrum, will handle the set design for the production. Dianna Bourke will serve as the costume designer for the
production. Schrum’s vision for this production is to pit Victorian Britain against Gothic Saxon Vampires, utilizing a
steampunk aesthetic with Jules Verne-esque settings and costumes.

At this time, plans are underway to provide a live stream of the November 24 performance using the same set up as is
used to live stream Pitt-Greensburg’s athletic events. The event will be available here during the 2 p.m. performance:
<http://www.livestream.com/pittgreensburgsportsnetwork>

“This is our first venture into a streamed performance. We hope that the live stream will allow family members and
friends who live at a distance or who are less mobile, as well as colleagues and collaborators in digital ventures from around the globe, to see the show,” said Schrum. “We’ve experimented with a blended reality performance, with
performers in the virtual world of Second Life and Ferguson Theater a few years ago, so this is the next step in adding
further digital capabilities to the Theatre Company’s performance resume.”

Emergency Notification System

The Emergency Notification System allows for a text/voice message to be dispatched to all subscribers that contains the type of emergency, locations, and instructions for subscribers.

An example of when this system would be activated is if there were a weather-related disaster that  would affect campus activities. This system is not used for campus closings due to bad roads or holiday schedule. The system is tested once each semester. Questions may be directed to the Campus Police at 724-836-9865.

Encourage your student to sign up for the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg ENS (Emergency Notification System). As a student of Pitt-Greensburg, they will want to be alerted in the event of an emergency. The system does not restrict students from entering the phone number of another person such as a parent or spouse.

Simply go to http://www.my.pitt.edu, select My Resources, Emergency Notification System. Complete the form on-line to register.
